Within our extra-curricular opportunities in the performing arts, we offer programs in Speech and Theatre that make the CVCS system shine within the greater community. Spring Musical and Fall Play boast some of the largest numbers in extra-curricular involvement, and we can thank the Activities Department for fostering an environment that encourages cross-involvement with athletics. The Spring Musical draws students from almost every activity at Columbus and offers students a chance to perform in Historic Downtown Cedar Falls on the stage at the Oster Regent Theatre. With students participating both on-stage and behind the scenes, this program works diligently to create a quality product and experience for everyone involved.

CVCS Fine Arts Programs Offered

As an Iowa High School Speech Association member-school, Columbus has found great success in Large Group and Individual Events Speech, having received annual nominations to All-State for eight consecutive years, building a tradition of excellence. Opportunities range from performance categories including Ensemble Acting, Group Improv, Solo Musical Theatre, Choral Reading, and Readers Theatre (among others) to oral interpretation categories such as Spontaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, After Dinner Speaking, Poetry, and Radio News, to name a few. The teams travels around Northeast Iowa for competitions over their winter season with All-State Festivals on the university campuses of Iowa State and Northern Iowa.
