CURRICULUM: LITERACY
CURRICULUM: LITERACY (ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS)
Developing strong communicators of our Catholic faith is the ultimate goal of the Cedar Valley Catholic Schools’ literacy (English Language Arts) curriculum. Our students are challenged to read comprehensively, write purposefully, listen critically, and speak effectively through a variety of integrated, developmentally appropriate learning experiences connected to a wide-range of literature and informational texts. Knowing that content area literacy is necessary for our students’ success in higher education and the workplace, literacy skills are developed throughout all curricular areas.
At the middle school and high school levels, specific content-related literacy skills are directly taught through the history/social studies, science and technical subjects curriculum. The Iowa Core Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade Literacy Standards provide the curriculum framework for Cedar Valley Catholic Schools to accomplish this objective. These standards are the focus of our literacy instruction.
